Planned Giving FAQ

What is planned giving?

Planned giving refers to charitable gifts you arrange now that are distributed in the future—typically through a will or trust, a retirement account, or a life insurance policy. It’s a powerful way to support Penquis’ mission while meeting your financial and philanthropic goals.

  • Include Penquis in your will or trust (specific amount, percentage, or remainder)
  • Name Penquis as a beneficiary of your IRA/401(k), life insurance, or bank/investment account
  • Give appreciated securities or real estate; consider gift annuities or remainder trusts
Do I need to be wealthy to leave a legacy gift?

No. Many people choose to leave a small percentage of their estate or make Penquis a beneficiary of an account or insurance policy. Every gift—of any size—makes a real difference.

A simple step to start now: add Penquis as a beneficiary to a retirement or life insurance policy. It’s often free and can be done online or with a short form.

Can I choose how my legacy gift is used?

Yes. We’ll work with you (and if you choose, your advisor) to designate your future gift toward programs that matter most—such as early childhood education, housing support, heating assistance, or transportation—or you can leave it unrestricted.

Is my planned gift confidential?

Yes. You decide whether to be recognized as a member of the Penquis Legacy Circle or remain anonymous. Your information is always handled with respect and confidentiality.

What if I already have a will or trust?

You can include Penquis with a simple amendment or codicil. For beneficiary designations, most updates are done via an easy form or online request.

We understand circumstances change. You can revise your will or update beneficiary designations at any time; your flexibility is preserved.

Do I need a lawyer?

I’m not ready to meet with a lawyer—can I still make a difference?

Absolutely. A simple first step is naming Penquis as a beneficiary of a retirement account or life insurance policy—often free and quick to complete.
